Black Panther Party 101

A collection of two documentary films about the Black Panther Party, active during the 1960's and 1970's on behalf of African American rights in the United States: "The Murder of Fred Hampton" (Dir. Howard Alk, 1971) and "Huey" A.K.A. "Black Panthers" (Dir. Agnès Varda, 1968).

The Black Panther Party (Wikipedia excerpts)

"Founded in Oakland, California, by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale in October 1966, the organization initially espoused a doctrine calling for the protection of the African American neighborhoods from police brutality, in the interest of African-American justice."

"The group created a Ten-Point Program, a document that called for "Land, Bread, Housing, Education, Clothing, Justice And Peace", as well as exemption from military service for African-American men, among other demands... They instituted a variety of community programs to alleviate poverty and improve health among communities deemed most needful of aid."

"...The Black Panther Party collapsed in the early 1970s. Some scholars of the movement have alleged that law enforcement officials went to great lengths to discredit and destroy the organization, including assassination."
