New Internationalist, a magazine I subscribed to for many years until travelling got in the way of having a permanent mailing address, reviewed This Side of Paradise in its August 2001 issue, giving it a rating of 3 stars (good) out of 5. The magazine has a circulation of over 50,000 and this review was very much appreciated.

New Internationalist "exists to report on issues of world poverty and inequality, to focus attention on the unjust relationship between the powerful and powerless in both rich and poor nations; to debate and campaign for the radical changes necessary within and between these nations if the basic material and spiritual needs are being met; and to bring to life the people, the ideas, the action in the fight for global justice".
