EQUIPMENT DONATIONS?
Some people have written in asking if they can donate equipment. In brief, unless you are based in the country, the answer is no. The problem with equipment donations right now is two-fold:
- Customs duties
- Israel imposes large taxes on the importing of computer equipment, making it almost as expensive as buying them locally.
- Time
- Israel has also held such donations at customs for long periods
of time, a lesson I learnt the hard way while working for Friends of Birzeit University and later, at Birzeit University.
The other reason I was asking for financial aid and not equipment for the Addameer appeal is that I really was hoping to be able to see this happen quickly, so that the equipment can be used now to report on the current clashes.
So, there is a problem with getting equipment into the country. If there were people in Palestine with equipment or if you were travelling there, that would be different, as it should be possible to get it to them quickly.
Saturday 7 October 2000
